You may think it’s all about sequels these days, but look to TV and the likes of Better Call Saul, Fargo, and Gotham, and you’ll see that prequels to various movies and TV shows are also invading the small screen.
You need only look at the examples above or Bates Motel and Hannibal to realise that it’s an approach which is so far really working really well, especially when they don’t necessarily rigidly adhere to what they’re building up to and instead create new stories which expand and develop those stories.
Here, we look at just ten TV shows, movies, and other types of properties (such as comic books) we think would benefit from getting their own prequel on the small screen. Are there any we’ve missed?
10. Boardwalk Empire
The fifth and final season of Boardwalk Empire took us to the past and actually showed us the one decision in Nucky Thompson’s life which years later would lead to his downfall. Starting with him as a child, some incredible casting decisions later took us to the gangster’s days as as sheriff in Atlantic City, and ended with Nucky handing Gillian over to The Commodore.
A prequel TV series could easily pick up from here and show the character’s rise to power as the gangster we met in the very first episode of the historical drama. There’s plenty of material they could mine from the early ’20s too, and bringing back the terrific cast who played the younger versions of the people we’ve come to know over the years would be a must.
Of course, the fact that the show was brought to an end after five seasons because of low ratings might not help this one’s cause…
