Topher Grace as Venom
Despite having an unfortunate habit of killing off the villains in his Spider-Man films, it’s hard to fault Sam Raimi for how he handled the Green Goblin and Doctor Octopus in the first two instalments of that franchise. Perhaps that’s why fans were so excited when it was revealed that Venom – a fan favourite character anyway – would be introduced in Spider-Man 3.
How did it all go so wrong? Well, the fact that the movie already had far too many villains and a terrible screenplay didn’t help, but Topher Grace just wasn’t the right actor to bring Eddie Brock to life on the big screen. Even forgiving that fairly major issue, Venom was crammed into the final act of the movie and didn’t work on any level. Sure, he looked kind of “cool” and that final battle was decent, but this isn’t the version of the character that any fan wanted to see.
A sad end to what should have been a great trilogy!
