5. The Last Temptation of Christ
Martin Scorsese’s only exploration into biblical territory caused a great deal of controversy back in 1988. Christian groups were outraged that the film depicted Christ as being tempted by lust, and having thoughts of engaging in sexual activity. In the end, the polarizing film proved to be divisive among critics, but it made Willem Dafoe a household name.
Religious films are often controversial, and Scorsese was aware that he would draw the ire of many for depicting this subject matter on the big screen. Dafoe bravely accepted the role, knowing that it could have an adverse effect on his career. In the end, it actually catapulted him into more prominent roles, and also a long period of consistently well-received performances with some very notable directors.
