Elysium - Matt DamonNeill Blomkamp’s immense debut with Disctrict 9 got absolutely everyone talking back in 2009, becoming a global success story that summer, and everyone’s been looking forward to his follow-up project ever since.

Due out in March next year, Elysium is another sci-fi/drama (with political overtones) shaping up to be one of 2013’s most anticipated films of the year, and now the first look at Matt Damon has hit the net.

“In the year 2159, two classes of people exist: the very wealthy “Coordinators,” people who can afford bio-genetical engineering, who live on a pristine man-made space station called Elysium, built by the Armadyne Corporation, and the rest, who live on an overpopulated, ruined Earth. Secretary Rhodes, a hard government of?cial, will stop at nothing to enforce anti-immigration laws and preserve the luxurious lifestyle of the citizens of Elysium. That doesn’t stop the people of Earth from trying to get in, by any means they can. When unlucky ex-con Max is backed into a corner, he agrees to take on a daunting mission that if successful will not only save his life, but could bring equality to these polarized worlds.”

The film’s viral site launched at Comic-Con last year, and Sony will be back at the convention this year bringing the film with it as part of their presentation, so here’s to hoping we’ll be getting more from it soon.

Blomkamp is once more directing from his own script, with District 9’s Sharlto Copley reteaming with Blomkamp again, alongside William Fichtner, Jodie Foster, Diego Luna, Alice Braga, and Faran Tahir.

Elysium is set to open on 1st March, 2013 in the UK and US. That’s definitely a date you’ll want to remember, and hopefully it will roll around pretty quickly, because after seeing what Blomkamp brought us in District 9, it’s safe to assume this is going to be brilliant.
