Rooney-Mara-and-Casey-Affleck-in-Aint-Them-Bodies-SaintsAin’t Them Bodies Saints blew audiences away at its Sundance premiere, and it’s long been a movie on my radar to look forward to. The early reviews have only heightened the anticipation, coming away from Sundance with two awards to its name, and the film has more recently been shown at Cannes to continuing positive buzz.

Following the first clip this week from what promises to be one of the year’s most powerful movies, IFC have debuted the first trailer, giving us a terrific full look at the film.

Bob Muldoon (Casey Affleck) and Ruth Guthrie (Rooney Mara), an impassioned young outlaw couple on an extended crime spree, are finally apprehended by lawmen after a shootout in the Texas hills. Although Ruth wounds a local officer, Bob takes the blame. But four years later, Bob escapes from prison and sets out to find Ruth and their daughter, born during his incarceration.

Set against the backdrop of 1970’s Texas Hill Country, director David Lowery paints a poetic picture, evoking the mythology of westerns and saturating the dramatic space with an aching sense of loss. Featuring powerful performances by Affleck, Mara as well as Ben Foster and Keith Carradine, AIN’T THEM BODIES SAINTS is a story of love, motherhood, and searching for peace while faced with an unrelenting past.

Casey Affleck, Rooney Mara, and Ben Foster star as the leading trio in an impressive cast, with Nate Parker and Keith Carradine starring alongside them.

David Lowery directs here from his own script, with Cassian Elwes (Blue Valentine), Toby Halbrooks (Upstream Color), Amy Kaufman (Y Tu Mamá También), James M. Johnston, and Jay Van Hoy (Beginners) producing.

Ain’t Them Bodies Saints will be released in the US on August 16th, and is definitely a must-see movie of the summer. Still no word yet on a UK release date, unfortunately, but I’m hoping that that will soon be changing, especially with all the positive buzz coming out of Sundance and its Cannes special screening.
