Jason Bateman is one of my favourite comedy actors at the moment, and it’s always good to hear of his new projects. This latest news from Deadline reports that he’ll be teaming up with Melissa McCarthy (Bridesmaids) for a new film called ID Theft.

Originally scripted to have two male leads, Bateman pushed to have McCarthy star opposite him instead after seeing her star in Bridesmaids, which has been one of the year’s highest-grossing films, earning more than a quarter of a billion dollars.

As such, the original script from Steve Conrad (The Pursuit of Happyness) is currently being rewritten by Craig Mazin (The Hangover Part II). Bateman will be playing the role of a guy whose identity is stolen, and McCarthy will now be playing the female rather than male identity thief. Having a role’s gender changed to be tailor-made for McCarthy is pretty impressive on her part, and though I haven’t seen Bridesmaids, I trust Bateman’s instincts and am already looking forward to the project.

The film is set to begin shooting in April next year, and Bateman will be taking on a role as producer as well, alongside Scott Stuber, who has produced some brilliant and popular films in the past few years, including Love and Other Drugs, Role Models, and The Break-Up. This definitely sounds like another great project for everyone involved, and will be something to look out for towards the end of next year or beginning of 2013.

Bateman’s latest film, Horrible Bosses, has widely been received really well, earning almost $150m. at the box office, and he’ll soon be back on our screens with Ryan Reynolds and Olivia Wilde in The Change-Up, released on 16th September. America hasn’t taken so well to the latter, getting it a month before us, but it’s a film I’m looking forward to seeing nonetheless.

As yet, the plot that’s been released for ID Theft doesn’t give us much detail to go on beyond that basic premise, which is pretty self-evident from the title, but a comedy with Bateman is always something to look forward to in my books, and it will hopefully be another great film in his increasingly successful career.
