Jackson has taken the film to Comic-Con this weekend, and has now been talking about a very interesting possibility.
He says that they’ve not been able to film a lot of material in the original novel and appendices, and that they’re currently in talks with the studio about going back to shoot more footage.
Whether that will turn into a trilogy or extended versions of the films isn’t yet known, and will no doubt depend on the direction the talks take in the coming days/weeks/months.
Jackson himself seems careful not to use the word ‘trilogy’ himself, but he does look to have a rather knowing smile on his face in the interview with HitFix below when first talking about going back to shoot more next year.
As things stand, The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey will be released this December, followed by The Hobbit: There and Back Again in December 2013. But it sounds like the possibility is there for that to change. Let us know your thoughts on a Hobbit trilogy in the comments below.
