Over the weekend, speculation began over the title of the sequel to J.J. Abrams’ Star Trek movie and it now looks like it’s been confirmed. The new movie will be titled Star Trek Into Darkness. The news was broken by TrekMovie.com who give us the following information:

“TrekMovie has confirmed with multiple sources that Star Trek Into Darkness” has been selected as the title for the Star Trek movie. As noted in our earlier article, the title does not include a colon, like were used for the Next Generation films such as “Star Trek: First Contact” or “Star Trek: Nemesis.”

This news coincides with the 46th anniversary of the original Star Trek TV series which was celebrated on Google.com by this fantastic Google Doodle on Friday.

Star Trek 2 (now Star Trek Into Darkness) will be with us May 17, 2013, is directed by J.J. Abrams and stars Chris Pine, Zachary Quinto, Benedict Cumberbatch, Zoe Saldana, Karl Urban, Simon Pegg, Anton Yelchin, Alice Eve, John Cho, Bruce Greenwood and Peter Weller.
