House of Cards

On February 14th, House of Cards returned to Netflix for a second season. As you might expect, it was just as good as the first batch of episodes, and viewers were grateful for the opportunity to binge watch all thirteen chapters in the space of a single weekend. Were you one of them?

Now, into spoiler territory!

The first season concluded with Frank Underwood becoming the Vice President of the United States, and as if that alone wasn’t enough of a reason to continue watching, we thought we’d present ten reasons why both new and returning viewers should be tuning into House of Cards.

Don’t worry though, despite addressing many of the main plot points, there aren’t any major spoilers in regards to the new episodes! If you’re wondering what else you should be watching in the first half of 2014, be sure to also check out our list of some new and returning must watch shows by clicking here.

10. Breaking The Fourth Wall

Many TV shows feature a narrator or similar plot device which gives the viewer a glimpse into the thoughts of a character (Dexter is a perfect example of a series that utilised both on a regular basis). However, House of Cards takes that one step further by having Kevin Spacey’s Frank Underwood break the fourth wall by turning to the camera and directly addressing the audience.

In the wrong hands, it’s something which could have totally killed this series, but using it sparingly and briefly to give us an idea of how Frank feels or what he’s really thinking ultimately serves as a way of making House of Cards even more engrossing. Indeed, sometimes only a sneaky look from Frank to the camera is all that’s needed to totally change the context of a scene.
