Zack Snyder 2

After years of sub-par efforts, we now seem to be finally entering the golden age of comic book movies. Sure, there are still a few stinkers here and there, but certain studios (well, Marvel Studios) are becoming synonymous with quality. There are also certain directors who either through singular or multiple efforts can now be relied upon to deliver the goods.

Whether we’re talking about filmmakers whose names are instantly recognisable after years of work or the most unlikeliest of choices who ended up directing what many consider an instant classic, we count down ten of the very best superhero movie directors for you right here.

10. Matthew Vaughn

Matthew Vaughn

He missed out (by choice) on Thor and X-Men: The Last Stand, but Matthew Vaughn’s debut in the superhero movie genre was still a massive success. The low-budget adaptation of Mark Millar and John Romita Jr.’s Kick-Ass caused controversy with readers of The Daily Mail but pretty much everyone else loved it. Violent, funny and sometimes shocking, the movie led to Vaughn tackling an even bigger comic book movie in the form of X-Men: First Class.

That prequel put the franchise back on track, with the way that the filmmaker handled the relationship between a young Magneto and Professor X being a definite highlight. After passing on Days of Future Past, next up for Vaughn is another Millarworld adaptation; The Secret Service. That stars everyone from Colin Firth to Samuel L. Jackson and Mark Hamill, and promises to be another hit for the director. Truly one of 2014’s must-see movies!
