A far cry from Pixar’s Cars, Coco portrays a classic experience both visually and musically whilst dipped in a candy vat of diversity in examining a culture we very rarely see in animation form.

Newcomer Anthony Gonzalez leads the project’s all-Latino voice cast as Miguel, a young boy from a shoemaker’s family who dreams of becoming a musician like his idol, the late Ernesto de la Cruz (Benjamin Bratt), despite his family having banned music for generations. Miguel will be accompanied on his adventure by a trickster named Hector, voiced by Gael Garcia Bernal.

Renee Victor will head Miguel’s family as his strict but devoted Abuelita, while Ana Ofelia Murguia plays his beloved great-grandmother, Mama Coco. Jaime Camil and Sofia Espinosa will voice his parents, while Luis Valdez will voice his uncle.

With the story heavily based on the Land of the Dead we have a few old relatives making a comeback from the grave – Alanna Ubach will voice his great-great-grandmother Mama Imelda, Selene Luna as his aunt Tia Rosita, Alfonso Arau as his great-grandfather Papa Julio, and Herbert Siguenza as his twin uncles Tio Oscar and Tio Felipe.

Miguel also encounters many other on his trip through the Land of the Dead include the curmudgeonly Chicharron, voiced by Edward James Olmos, a corrections officer voiced by Cheech Marin, an emcee voiced by Blanca Araceli, a clerk voiced by Gabriel Iglesias, and an arrival agent voiced by Octavio Solis.

Co-directed by one of the studio’s core directors, Unkrich’s vast experience has seen him work on some of the studio’s most popular offerings such as Finding Nemo and Toy Story 2 and 3, a man who takes his work so seriously that back in 2010 he admitted when he first started working on Toy Story 3 he woke up every day feeling physically ill with anxiety.

Here’s the new trailer.
