Superhero movies are so secretive these days that getting something as simple as a plot synopsis feels like a really big deal, and in the case of X-Men: Apocalypse, it actually is!

That’s because along with the usual hints and teases about what’s to come, it reveals that Mystique is now leading the X-Men alongside Professor X. While the character has frequently been part of the mutant team in the comic books, this is still a pretty major departure from the source material, but an interesting twist which feels right for this version of Raven.

We also find out more about Apocalypse’s role in the Bryan Singer helmed movie, along with details about how and why Magneto ends up working for him. Here’s the whole thing:

Since the dawn of civilization, he was worshiped as a god. Apocalypse, the first and most powerful mutant from Marvel’s X-Men universe, amassed the powers of many other mutants, becoming immortal and invincible. Upon awakening after thousands of years, he is disillusioned with the world as he finds it and recruits a team of powerful mutants, including a disheartened Magneto (Michael Fassbender), to cleanse mankind and create a new world order, over which he will reign. As the fate of the Earth hangs in the balance, Raven (Jennifer Lawrence) with the help of Professor X (James McAvoy) must lead a team of young X-Men to stop their greatest nemesis and save mankind from complete destruction.

Pretty intriguing, eh? Not much is known about what’s in store for the X-Men franchise following the release of this one, but X-Men: Apocalypse has frequently been referred to as the end of this era of the popular franchise, so big changes are no doubt on the way.

Most believe those will involve the focus being shifted to younger heroes like Cyclops, Jean Grey, and Storm, and that does seem like the best possible direction moving forward…
