Here’s the first trailer for The Assignment which sees Avatar / Fast and Furious star Michelle Rodriguez play both the the character of Frank Kitchen and Tomboy. This movie played at Toronto Film Festival last year and received a mixed bag of reviews along with some bad press due to the subject matter.

In a rather bizarre premise, Frank Kitchen (Rodriguez) is an assassin who is inadvertently double crossed by a group of gangsters and given to a surgeon only known only as ‘The Doctor’. For reasons not entirely clear, The Doctor turns Frank into a woman without his prior consent. Once he awakes, Kitchen – now a woman named ‘Tomboy’ looks for revenge against those who kidnapped him ably assisted by a nurse named Johnnie who also has secrets.

The Assignment has not been received overly well with the transgender community looking to boycott the film (which was originally know as (Re) Assignment – in fact that was the given title at TIFF) due to the negative outlook on the films forced transgender reassignment.

Joining Rodriguez are Tony Shalhoub, Anthony LaPaglia, Caitlin Gerard, Sigourney Weaver and Caroline Chan and comes from writer / directors Walter Hill and Roger Julian Cross. The original story comes from the short-film Tomboy which was written by Denis Hamil back in 1978 although the story has been changed somewhat from his original idea.

There’s no UK release date for The Assignment as yet but we’ll let you know when that arrives.
