We already know that Liam Hemsworth will play the lead in Independence Day 2 (it’s now being reported that he’ll star as the son-in-law of the President), but now Jessie Usher has been cast in another major role.

The actor is perhaps best known on the other side of the pond for starring in Starz series Survivor’s Remorse.

Michael B. Jordan (Fantastic Four) had been rumoured for this role, but Usher is indeed set to play the son of Will Smith’s character from the 1996 movie which grossed over $800 million when it was released.

There had been talk of Independence Day 2 being split into two movies, but the plan is to now make just a single film which will be released in 2016. Carter Blanchard rewrote the most recent draft of the script which has initially been penned by Roland Emmerich and Dean Devlin, with James Vanderbilt also contributing.

Unfortunately, as has been previously reported, Will Smith is still NOT expected to reprise the role which played a big part in making him a household name back in 1996. He’ll be busy with Suicide Squad anyway.

Independence Day has developed a passionate fanbase over the years, but whether or not a sequel will be embraced nearly 20 years since the release of the first remains to be seen. Are you looking forward to it?
