When Steve McQueen made Hunger – it felt like a special debut for a young, British filmmaker, as though the start of something. A few years down the line and he’s picked up the award for Best Picture at the Academy Awards for 12 Years a Slave.

There’s a sense with debutant John Maclean that his first feature Slow West, could also be the start of something special. And what do the two share in common? Well, both of their debuts had Michael Fassbender in a leading role, and that’s never a bad start.

We discussed with Maclean what it was like collaborating with one of the most revered actors on the planet, while he also discusses the Western genre and what he has coming up in the pipeline.

Slow West is released on June 26th. You can read our four star review here.
