Drift-PosterBased on a true story, Drift is the new surfing drama soon to be hitting the big screen, following a few months after last year’s Chasing Mavericks.

Lionsgate will be releasing it into theatres this August, after an early July release on VOD. And with both release dates on the horizon (no ocean wordplay intended), they’ve released the first US trailer over on Apple.

After their mother escapes from Sydney to Margaret River in the 1970’s, the two Kelly brothers spend their youth searching for the perfect wave. Out of necessity the family launch a backyard surf business – re-thinking board design, crafting homemade wetsuits and selling merchandise out of their van. Battling big waves, small town conservatism and criminals, the brothers give rise to a global brand. A story of passion, corruption, friendship and loyalty, deadly addictions and fractured relationships, DRIFT tells a tale of courage and the will to survive at all odds.

Myles Pollard, Xavier Samuel, and Sam Worthington take the lead for the sporting drama. And they star alongside Robyn Malcolm, Lesley-Ann Brandt, Aaron Glenane, Steve Bastoni, and Maurie Ogden.

Morgan O’Neill (The Factory) and Ben Nott co-directed the film, with O’Neill penning the script and Nott making his feature debut behind the camera.

Drift will be released on VOD on July 2nd in the US, with its theatrical release date following on August 2nd. The film has already been released in its native Australia, and there’s no word yet on when it will be arriving on our shores (see above wordplay comment), but quite likely it’ll be a little later on in the year.
