Doctor Who returned to BBC One a couple of weeks ago, and it has now been revealed that a spinoff series aimed at a Young Adult audience is in the works at BBC Three (some much needed good news after this happened). Titled Class, it will be set in present day London and specifically Coal Hill School, a location fans of the series will no doubt be familiar with.

“With all the action, heart and adrenalin of the best YA fiction (Buffy, Hunger Games), this is Coal Hill School and Doctor Who like you’ve never seen it before,” BBC said earlier today.

Class is set to be executive produced by acclaimed YA author Patrick Ness (A Monster Calls).

“No one has documented the dark and exhilarating world of the teenager like Patrick Ness, and now we’re bringing his brilliant storytelling into Doctor Who,” said Steven Moffat, lead writer and executive producer for Doctor Who, in the press release announcing the plan for the spinoff series. “This is growing up in modern Britain — but with monsters!”

“I’m astounded and thrilled to be entering the Doctor Who universe, which is as vast as time and space itself,” Ness said of the series in the same press release. “There’s so much room there for all kinds of amazing stories, and to work with Steven Moffat and Brian Minchin to find a place to tell one of my own has been an absolute joy. I can’t wait for people to meet the heroes of Class, to meet the all-new villains and aliens, to remember that the horrors of the darkest corners of existence are just about on par with having to pass your A-Levels.”

Class is set to start shooting in Wales next year, and it should be interesting to see how the Doctor Who spinoff ends up coming together over the coming months. What do you think?
