There are a lot of very exciting Marvel and DC Comics superhero movies on the way over the next few years, but are you ready for…Captain Planet?! The Hollywood Reporter reveals that Paramount has picked up the rights to the short-lived 1990s series which ran for two years.

For those of you who don’t remember that, the trade sums up the plot as follows: “It revolved around five young people from around the world who were given magical rings that had the power to control natural elements. United, they can summon Captain Planet, a superhero who helps them fight against environmental evils.” Sounds pretty unique, right?

What makes this project particularly exciting is the fact that Leonardo DiCaprio’s Appian Way banner is teaming up with the studio for Captain Planet, and they’re currently in talks with Jono Matt and Scream Queens star Glen Powell to pen the screenplay for the movie. It’s currently unclear whether or not the latter is planning to star in the movie as the titular hero.

DiCaprio has done a lot of work to help bring attention to saving the environment, and this movie should help with that in a big way. Rather than adapting the animated series, this version of Captain Planet will take place years after the events of the TV show with the Captain now a washed up has been who needs the kids more than they need him.

That actually sounds like a fun take, and more details will hopefully be revealed soon.
