According to The Wrap, How I Met Your Mother alum and Avengers: Age of Ultron star Cobie Smulders is in early talks to join Tom Cruise in Jack Reacher 2. Christopher McQuarrie directed the first movie which was released in 2012 and earned over $218 million worldwide.

However, Ed Zwick (The Last Samurai) will be taking over writing and directing duties for the sequel. With the Mission: Impossible Rogue Nation follow-up expected to begin shooting next year, it’s likely that McQuarrie will be prepping for that based on the success of the latest instalment. If so, he’ll be the first filmmaker to helm more than one of those movies.

Back to Jack Reacher though, and Smulders is expected to be up for the lead female role in the movie. Rosamund Pike took on that part in the last one, but Cruise likes to switch up the leading ladies he works with. The sequel is expected to be released late next year and is based on Lee Child’s Never Go Back. McQuarrie is staying on as an executive producer.

With How I Met Your Mother now at an end, Smulders has made her presence felt in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, showing up in Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., Captain America: The Winter Soldier, and Avengers: Age of Ultron. She’s also starred in a number of Indies.
