Yahya Abdul-Mateen II is set to join the Disney+ and Marvel series ‘Wonder Man’ in the titular role.

Abdul-Mateen II will take on the role of ‘Wonder man’ a.k.a. Simon Williams, who transforms into the titular superhero.

The show will focus on the Marvel character Simon Williams, a.k.a. Wonder Man. In the comics, Williams is the son of a wealthy industrialist whose company falls on hard times due to competition from Tony Stark’s Stark Industries. Williams then accepts an offer from villain Baron Zemo that gives him ionic superpowers including super strength and durability. After fighting the Avengers several times, Wonder Man ultimately joined their ranks.

Ben Kingsley is set to return as failed-actor-turned-reformed-villain Trevor Slattery, which he originated in 2013’s ‘Iron Man 3’ and reprised in ‘Shang-Chi.’

Destin Daniel Cretton, who directed and co-wrote ‘Shang-Chi’ and will serve as an executive producer and co-creator on the ‘Wonder Man’ series. Cretton may direct as well, but his schedule is looking a bit tight: He’s already set to direct 2025’s ‘Avengers: The Kang Dynasty’ and he’s expected to helm a possible ‘Shang-Chi’ sequel.

Abdul-Mateen II is best known for playing the villain Black Manta in 2018’s ‘Aquaman’ and Dr. Manhattan in HBO’s 2019 series ‘Watchmen,’ for which he won an Emmy. He’s already set to reprise Black Manta in ‘Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom,’ currently scheduled for Christmas 2023. He was most recently seen in 2021’s ‘Candyman’ and 2022’s ‘Ambulance’ alongside Jake Gyllenhaal.
