The images give us our first look at the titular character, Dark Phoenix played by Sophie Turner, as well as a chilling image of Jessica Chastain as the villain in the cinematic version as well as returning character Mystique (Jenifer Lawrence) and Michael Fassbender having a chat with the film’s director, Simon Kinberg. You can view the images at the bottom of this post.

Also released alongside the images is a brief plot outline of what we can expect from the comic book adaptation.

The story is said to be set in 1992, nearly ten years after ‘Apocalypse’ as the X-Men have become national heroes. Charles Xavier (James McAvoy) starts sending his X-Men on increasingly dangerous missions until a space-bound rescue sees a solar flare strike the X-Jet, awakening a long-dormant power in Jean Grey.

We spoke to Jessica Chastain about her role in the new film this week – take a look.

The Dark Phoenix comic saga actually focused Jean Grey and the Phoenix force which in the plot of X-Men: The Last Stand contained elements of the Dark Phoenix Saga. The Phoenix is a dual personality of Jean, which Professor X had telepathically repressed during her childhood, fearing its destructive potential. It is awakened after Jean cocoons herself in telekinetic energy to survive the collapse of Alkali Lake. The Phoenix behaves irresponsibly, has no control over her decision-making, and exposes her sexual desires for Wolverine, sides with Magneto and even murders Professor X and Cyclops. The Phoenix is destroyed when Jean is euthanised by Wolverine.

Jessica Chastain’s villain is described as “an otherworldly shapeshifter who comes into contact with Phoenix” which has quickly led to the conclusion she’s playing The Skrull Queen.

James McAvoy, Michael Fassbender, Tye Sheridan, Nicholas Hoult, Alexandra Shipp, Kodi Smit-McPhee, Evan Peters, and Olivia Munn also return with are Lamar Johnson.

The film is slated for a November 2nd 2018 release
