This past weekend the 26th annual Wondercon was held in Anaheim, CA and HeyUGuys was there. 20th Century Fox rolled out their two biggest summer releases in both Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter and Ridley Scott’s return to sci-fi: Prometheus.

Most of the details about Prometheus have been pretty vague in order to maintain the mystery of the film which has both driven fans crazy and added to the excitement!

correspondent Brenden Toda was lucky enough to not only attend the panel but also grab a seat at the press conference with actor Michael Fassbender, Screenwriter Damon Lindelof and Sir Ridley Scott himself.

Here are a few details they shared at the event:

  • This is NOT a straight up ‘Alien’ sequel or prequel as it would be too difficult to account for everything that came before Prometheus. The project was originally conceived as an ‘Alien’ prequel but they felt that if the audience knew where the movie was going to end the journey would not have been interesting. Once they dropped the idea of the prequel the project changed into something completely new. Ridley did not want to repeat himself.
  • The definition of cutting edge technology as it’s portrayed in film is different today than it was thirty years ago. When ‘Blade Runner’ and ‘Alien’ first came out simple things like computers and monitors populated their vision of the future. The panelists touched on some smaller decisions to cover the advancements in technology like the helmets on the spacesuits. Ridley mentions how he wanted full spherical globes made of glass and said “If I’m in 2083 and I’m going to space, why would I design a helmet that has blind spots?”
  • Michael Fassbender plays David, an android who is left alone for two and a half years while the crew is traveling in space. Fassbender commented that David is left to figure out how to entertain himself for that time he has alone, and begins to develop human characteristics such as imagination. David was built to incorporate himself into the environment, but things start to get interesting when he starts making connections in the world.
  • Screenwriter Damon Lindelof commented on the character of David saying that while the android is mass-produced (something like 20,000 other Davids walking around) much like our smart phones that can each have different apps, cases, etc. David fully comes into his own due to the unusual setting.
  • While many would be quick to categorize Prometheus as just a Horror or Sci-Fi film, Ridley says that it’s not just one thing. There will be adventure elements, and a bit of humor. The film will take it’s time building and simply let the talent of Ridley Scott and the exceptional cast shine. The bottom line was to just make a good movie.
  • The end of Prometheus will leave some things open for a potential sequel. This was again one of the reasons they decided against making it an ‘Alien’ prequel so that the end of Prometheus is not Kane (John Hurt) finding the room full of eggs. Should the movie prove successful and another is made, the subject matter would stray even farther away from the ‘Alien’ franchise & mythos.
