Apple Original Films has officially lifted the curtain on one of its most anticipated upcoming features, confirming that principal photography is now underway for ‘What Happens at Night,’ directed by Martin Scorsese. Alongside the announcement, a striking first-look image has been released, offering an early glimpse into the film’s dreamlike and atmospheric world.

The project reunites Scorsese with longtime collaborator Leonardo DiCaprio, who stars and produces alongside fellow Academy Award-winner Jennifer Lawrence. Scorsese and DiCaprio previously worked together under the Apple banner on ‘Killers of the Flower Moon,’ a critically acclaimed epic that earned 10 Academy Award nominations.

Adapted from the novel by Peter Cameron, ‘What Happens at Night’ follows a married American couple who travel to a remote, snow-covered European town to adopt a baby. What begins as a hopeful journey soon drifts into something far more surreal and unsettling, with the story described as a “dream-like” exploration of love, isolation, and the unknown.

The first-look image hints at an eerie stillness, suggesting Scorsese may be leaning into a more atmospheric, psychological tone.

Joining DiCaprio and Lawrence is an impressive ensemble that includes Patricia Clarkson, Mads Mikkelsen, Jared Harris, and Welker White.

Scorsese directs and produces through Sikelia Productions, with DiCaprio, Lawrence, and Daniel Lupi also serving as producers. Executive producers include Lisa Frechette and Marianne Bower for Sikelia, Jennifer Davisson for Appian Way, and Justine Ciarrocchi for Excellent Cadaver.

Filming is currently taking place in the Czech Republic, with support from the Czech Film Commission.
