Warner Bros. have hired Shane Black, director of the cult-classic Kiss Kiss Bang Bang, to direct a new live action adaptation of the hugely successful Japanese manga series Death Note.

Anthony Bagarozzi and Charles Mondry are currently in the process of writing the adapted screenplay.

Death Note was created by writer Tsugumi Ohba and manga artist Takeshi Obata. It centers on Light Yagami, a high school student who discovers a supernatural notebook – the Death Note – dropped on Earth by a death god, and his subsequent attempts to rule a world cleansed of evil.

The series is wildly popular in Japan and has already been turned into live action and animated films, TV series’ and video games.
