The cast of Roland Emmerich’s Independence Day sequel continues to grow, and another original cast member has now returned. Vivica A. Fox will reprise the role of Jasmine Dubrow, a single mother (and exotic dancer) in the first movie who fled to Area 51 with her son and married the character played by Will Smith.

She joins a cast which so far includes Liam Hemsworth, Jessie Usher, Charlotte Gainsbourg, and Jeff Goldblum. Bill Pullman is also expected to return. Usher actually plays the son of Will Smith’s character from the first movie. Independence Day grossed over $800 million when it was released back in 1996.

There had been talk of Independence Day 2 being split into two movies, but the plan is to now make just a single film which will be released in 2016. Carter Blanchard rewrote the script which had initially been penned by Roland Emmerich and Dean Devlin, with James Vanderbilt also contributing. The latest draft comes from James A. Woods and Nicolas Wright. Finding the right story was clearly a challenge!

Unfortunately, as has been previously reported, Will Smith is still NOT expected to reprise the role which played a big part in making him a household name back in 1996. He’ll be busy with Suicide Squad anyway.

Independence Day has developed a passionate fanbase over the years, but whether or not a sequel will be embraced nearly 20 years since the release of the first remains to be seen. Are you looking forward to it?
