There’s been talk of Universal launching a shared Cinematic Universe for their classic movie monsters for a while now, and while Dracula Untold wasn’t exactly the best of starts, that’s still said to be the studio’s plan. One already dated is their new take on The Mummy; set for release on March 24th, 2017, Alex Kurtzman is directing from a script by Jon Spaihts.

In an interesting new twist though, it’s been revealed today that The Mummy who will be featured in the movie could end up being female. The origin story for this take on the iconic monster is described as “unique”, but no further details were provided beyond that.

In both the original 1932 movie and the subsequent remake in 1999, The Mummy was of course portrayed as a male – most famously by Boris Karloff – and always has been in the various other formats he’s been depicted in, whether it’s comic books or cartoons.

Apparently, the chances of The Mummy being portrayed as a woman is going to come down to casting as the studio’s backup plan does indeed involve a male version. This take on the classic franchise is also unique in the respect that it’s going to be set in the present day.

As well as The Mummy, Universal are also looking to bring classic monsters like Frankenstein, the Invisible Man, and vampire hunter Van Helsing back to the big screen.
