She’s one of the most familiar faces on our TV screens. From This Is England to
Line Of Duty and now Trigger Point, Vicky McClure has become the go-to actor for
playing determined, single-minded women in the toughest of jobs. And playing a
bomb disposal officer in ITV’s Trigger Point, which starts its third season this
weekend, is perhaps her most challenging yet.
Season two of the show averaged over 8 million viewers and was streamed 30
million times on ITVX and, as McClure reveals in the exclusive interview below,
season three promises to provide even more nerve-jangling moments. “We don’t
hear much about explosives officers in real life – they’re unsung heroes – yet they’re
so courageous. For us, their job creates brilliant plots, as well as loads of edge-of-your-seat moments. It’s a new spin in crime drama.” The new season has a powerful
emotional angle as well, with her character, Lana Washington, trying to deal with
personal loss but, as ever, doing it in her own way. “She’s seen a lot of death and
destruction, but she doesn’t want much help or to talk about it.” And, on top of that,
she and her team are up against a solitary, relentless adversary.
Uniquely, seasons three and four of the show have been filmed back-to-back,
something McClure has never done before and which she says created a “great vibe
on set”. It’s been a physically demanding experience but, despite the action
sequences and wearing a lot of heavy kit, she didn’t do any special training. And,
determined to keep it real, she made sure her backpack really did contain Lana’s
work equipment!
