A successful sequel is a rarity in the movie industry quick to leap on the merest whiff of success sequels are churned out to captalise on the serendipity of the surprise hit. However there are a number of sequels, and here we are turning our spotlight onto the overcrowded horror genre, which build on the interesting elements of the original. They might expand the world, give new and terrible context to the events of the first film or show us the aftermath of the horrific narrative which made the original a hit.
Here are ten of the best horror sequels.
Nightmare on Elm Street 3: Dream Warriors
The Nightmare on Elm Street franchise has been guilty of some absolute stinkers in its time and whilst Wes Craven’s a New Nightmare is certainly an enjoyable affair the title of best sequel in this franchise belongs to the genuinely terrifying Nightmare on Elm Street 3: Dream Warriors.
After a disappointing sequel in the shape of Nightmare on Elm Street 2 the franchise came back to life with its third instalment, which saw Freddy terrorising the dreams of a group of children in a mental asylum. The film’s choice of location gave it a sinister tone that was seriously lacking from the movies first sequel and it also provided us with one of the most memorable murders in the whole of the Franchise.
