When the cast of Suicide Squad was announced last year, one of the most exciting additions was no doubt Tom Hardy as the team’s leader, Rick Flagg. Unfortunately, for reasons unknown, it has today been revealed that the British actor who played DC Comics villain Bane in The Dark Knight Rises has now left the movie.

Fury helmer David Ayer is directing the comic book movie which focuses on a team of villains who agree to work for the government by going on extremely dangerous missions in exchange for reduced prison time.

The cast includes Will Smith (Deadshot), Margot Robbie (Harley Quinn), Jared Leto (The Joker), and Jai Courtney (Captain Boomerang). Rick Flagg is expected to one of Suicide Squad’s lead characters. There are no specifics on why Hardy has left, but we’re sure to hear something sooner rather than later.

However, it’s already being reported by another of the trades that Nightcrawler star Jake Gyllenhaal is in talks to reunite with End of Watch director David Ayer to take over for Hardy as Rick Flagg! They also say that The Revenant going over schedule may be the cause of the Mad Max: Fury Road star’s departure.

Comic book fans have been clamouring to see Gyllenhaal in a superhero movie for quite some time now, and Suicide Squad would certainly fulfil that! How would you feel about him in enlisting in the Suicide Squad?
