Eight years after introducing us to the legend of Ron Burgundy Adam McKay and Will Ferrell are ready to go into production on a sequel following a long-awaited greenlight for Anchorman 2.

McKay will return as director and Steve Carrell, Paul Rudd and David Koechner are expected to return when production is entered later in the year.

The prospect of a sequel has been hanging around like a really bad smell for a while. In 2010 McKay discussed the status of the sequel claiming that he would love to do a musical with the team. At the time he mentioned the success of The Hangover as a new measure of quality and it could be that with Bridesmaids doing so well there’s a new market for the studios to sell to, hence the sequel.

Burgundy himself appeared on Conan O’Brien’s show to make the announcement in the best way possible: with a flute intro. Check it out below.
