Horror crossovers do happen (Freddy vs. Jason, Alien vs. Predator, etc.), but is pitting the monsters from The Ring and The Grudge against each other a new low? Well, the iconic baddies will be squaring off in upcoming Japanese mashup movie Sadako Vs. Kayako.
In case you’ve forgotten, Sadako (The Ring) and Kayako (The Grudge) are the names of each demonic entity, and both of them are young girls who return from the grave for revenge. What leads them to fight and/or team-up? The trailer below sheds at least some light on that, while we also have a poster for this rather bizarre sounding release.
Perhaps the most surprising thing about the decision to return to these classic Japanese horror franchises is the fact that the movie is inspired by a well-received fan-made video which went viral last year. K?ji Shiraishi is directing the crossover, and Mizuki Yamamoto will star as protagonist Y?ri. As always, it remains to be seen whether it will get a UK/US release.
Surprisingly, there are currently no plans to reboot The Grudge franchise (it’s not as if that’s a bad thing in all honesty), but The Ring sequel Rings is still set to be released this year.
