Universal Pictures has released a chilling new trailer for ‘The Exorcist: Martyrs,’ a terrifying new chapter in the iconic horror franchise starring Academy Award nominee Scarlett Johansson and directed by genre auteur Mike Flanagan.
Flanagan, the acclaimed filmmaker behind ‘The Haunting of Hill House,’ ‘The Fall of the House of Usher,’ ‘Midnight Mass’ and ‘Doctor Sleep,’ takes audiences into a new realm of supernatural terror with a story that connects a series of disturbing crimes to an evil that reaches far beyond the mortal world.
‘The Exorcist: Martyrs’ follows New York City detective Julie Miller (Johansson), who became a hero 13 years ago after bringing the reign of terror of satanic serial killer Father Sunday to an end. Since then, she has buried herself in her work, leaving the horrors of the case firmly in the past.
However, when a new killer scrawls her name in an altar boy’s blood across the walls of a church crypt, Miller is dragged back into the darkness she believed she had left behind.
With the help of former prison chaplain Father William (Chiwetel Ejiofor), who heard Father Sunday’s final confession, and sharp rookie detective Gina Restrepo (Sasha Calle), Miller begins to uncover a disturbing connection between a lineage of serial killers, stretching from H.H. Holmes to the Zodiac. As the investigation deepens, she discovers a sinister thread that threatens to corrupt everything, and everyone, she holds dear.
The film boasts an ensemble cast, with Academy Award nominee Diane Lane playing Mary, Miller’s mother, who has moved in with her daughter to help raise her grandson Max (Jacobi Jupe). Actor Award winner Scoot McNairy stars as paroled convict Clay Silver, while Emmy winner Gil Bellows plays Peter Nicks, a former acolyte of Father Sunday.
Emmy and Tony Award-winning screen legend Laurence Fishburne also stars as revered priest Father Nichol, with Emmy and Special Tony Award winner John Leguizamo taking on the menacing role of Father Sunday.
