Charlie McDowell returned to Sundance this year to debut his latest mind-bending exploration of the human condition. Three years ago his wondrous study of the complexities of a couple’s relationships, The One I Love, gave audiences a chance to see what the writer/director was all about. This year his latest film, The Discovery, played to captivated audiences at the festival.

As part of their Park City plunder Netflix snapped up the rights to McDowell’s latest, and we should be seeing it hit our small screens in a month’s time. Something of a spiritual sequel to Zal Batmanglij’s The OA, the set up is proper Black Mirror stuff. A scientist proves the existence of an afterlife, and we join the story one year after the revelation. Suicide rates are rocketing, the nature of existence challenged and our tight hold on life loosened to disconcerting degree.

The film stars Jason Segel, Rooney Mara, Robert Redford, Jesse Plemons, Riley Keough and Ron Canada. Take a look at the intriguing new trailer below.

The Discovery hits Netflix on the 31st of March.
