With a name to ring a dozen Hollywood bells every time it’s spoken a new film from Sofia Coppola will always bring a measure of excitement. The last film she produced was the Netflix Holiday special A Very Murray Christmas, which she directed and co-wrote with Bill Murray and Mitch Glazer. Before that she stood in the eye of the Californian
The film was adapted by Coppola from Thomas Cullinan 1966’s novel A Painted Devil and Don Siegel’s own cinematic adaptation of the story in 1971 (a film which shares the name The Beguiled). The stage is set in 1863, during the American Civil War, at an all-girls boarding school in Mississippi. An injured Union solider happens upon the school close to death and the faculty reluctantly agree to nurse him back to health. As you can image a solider, in the form of Colin Farrell no less, stirs up all manner of emotions and as the world outside retreats the girls’ reaction to this interloper becomes more extreme as time passes.
Joining Farrell in the cast are Nicole Kidman as the headmistress of the school, Coppola regular Kirsten Dunst and Elle Fanning, Emma Howard, Oona Laurence, The Nice Guys’ Angourie Rice and Addison Riecke. The trailer is notable for showing of The Grandmaster cinematographer Philippe Le Sourd’s beautiful compositions. Check it out below.
The Beguiled will be released in UK cinemas on June 23rd 2017. Here’s the first trailer.
