Netflix has unveiled the first official trailer for ‘Steve,’ the new drama from director Tim Mielants (The Terror, Patrick) starring Academy Award® winner Cillian Murphy (Oppenheimer, Peaky Blinders) alongside rising star Jay Lycurgo (Half Bad: The Bastard Son & The Devil Himself, I May Destroy You). The film is a bold reimagining of Max Porter’s Sunday Times bestseller Shy.

Set in the mid-90s, Steve follows a pivotal day in the life of headteacher Steve (Murphy), who runs a last-chance reform school for troubled teens. With the institution facing imminent closure, Steve fights to preserve its integrity while wrestling with his own mental health.

Running parallel to his story is that of Shy (Lycurgo), a teenager navigating the fragile line between self-destruction and redemption. Caught in the weight of his past and the uncertainty of his future, Shy’s journey mirrors Steve’s struggle to find hope in a world that has all but abandoned them.

The supporting cast features Tracey Ullman (The Tracey Ullman Show, Mrs. America), Simbi Ajikawo (Top Boy), and Emily Watson (Breaking the Waves, Small Things Like These).

The trailer teases a raw, emotional portrait of resilience, connection, and the fight to protect those on society’s margins — all underscored by Mielants’ intimate direction and Porter’s lyrical storytelling.
