Film4 have announced that Steve Coogan is to reunite with director Michael Winterbottom for a biopic of infamous Soho porn man Paul Raymond in the film King of Soho.

Winterbottom recently directed Coogan in the BBC series The Trip which featured a classic Caine-off between Coogan and co-star Rob Brydon ( you can see that here) along with the fondly remembered 24 Hour Party People and A Cock and Bull Story.

Coogan was rumoured to be playing the part as far back as June of last year when Chorlte broke the news of the film’s final negotiations, then under the wonderfully silly title of ‘Paul Raymond’s Wonderful World Of Erotica’, and now Film4 have confirmed the casting along with a number of co-stars including Anna Friel, Tamsin Edgerton and Imogen Poots.

The script is from Matt Greenhalgh, who previously worked on Nowhere Boy and Control, from the work of Raymond’s biographer Paul Willett. There is clearly much common ground between this and the previous collaborations between the director and his star, as a period piece centered around a man becoming immensely successful and ruling his particular stomping ground by heralding in a new and exciting cultural movement. Raymond’s Revue Bar in Soho was famous in the early 80s as a place for alternative comedians to make their name as well as being a palace of unrelenting smut.

Very much looking forward to this one, Film4 know a good thing when they see one.
