Although I very much enjoyed Deep Rising and the first Mummy film, it does seem as though Stephen Sommers has drifted a little since then.

The Mummy Returns, Van Helsing and GI Joe were all well below par to say the least, so let’s hope this new offering will be a return to better form.

Screen Daily say that Odd Thomas, a “supernatural adventure romance” to be directed by Sommers, is being pitched by Fusion Films at AFM and receiving an enthusiastic response.

Coming Soon add that Sommers has written the script, based on a character created by Dean Koontz who is a clairvoyant able to see, but not hear, the dead. Sommers is reported as having said:-

As soon as I read the book I felt compelled to turn it into a movie. It’s a fantastic love affair between these two wonderful characters.

The story combines action with heart, laughs and scares. It felt right to be doing this independently and I’m excited to take this to the market.

Odd Thomas has been budgeted at $47m, which is small fry indeed compared to some of Sommers’ more recent tent-pole efforts. Hopefully that will bring more focus on story, character and performance and less on special effects and dizzying set pieces. We’ll let you know as more news comes out.

Dave has been writing for HeyUGuys since mid-2010 and has found them to be the most intelligent, friendly, erudite and insightful bunch of film fans you could hope to work with. He's gone from ham-fisted attempts at writing the news to interviewing Lawrence Bender, Renny Harlin and Julian Glover, to writing articles about things he loves that people have actually read. He has fairly broad tastes as far as films are concerned, though given the choice he's likely to go for Con Air over Battleship Potemkin most days. He's pretty sure that 2001: A Space Odyssey is the most overrated mess in cinematic history.
