When Disney bought Lucasfilm for a whopping $4 billion, they decided to scrap the Expanded Universe. That’s a decision which upset a lot of fans, especially as it wiped out decades worth of history which was established as canon in various TV shows, books, comics, and games.
You can hardly blame them for that as they would have been massively restricted had they taken that convoluted history into account moving forward, but fans will be very happy with the new trailer for Star Wars Rebels season three as one beloved villain makes his return.
That is Grand Admiral Thrawn, a villain created by Timothy Zahn in the novel Heir to the Empire. He took over the Empire following the events of the Battle of Endor in Return of the Jedi, but this version will make his presence felt in the years covered by Star Wars Rebels. He’ll be voiced by Lars Mikkelsen, the brother of Mads, who will be seen in Rogue One.
