It has just been announced that the creators and showrunners of HBO’s Game of Thrones are to bring a new series of Star Wars films to the big screen. Star Wars.com made the announcement a moment ago with David Benioff and D.B. Weiss telling the site, “In the summer of 1977 we traveled to a galaxy far, far away, and we’ve been dreaming of it ever since…We are honored by the opportunity, a little terrified by the responsibility, and so excited to get started as soon as the final season of Game of Thrones is complete.”

It was also stated that these new films, possibly a new trilogy, will be not be connected to the Skywalker Saga nor to the new trilogy of films being created by The Last Jedi’s Rian Johnson. This move for the pair probably puts the nail in the coffin for the ill-received HBO series Confederate, whose announcement was met with a less than thrilling response. It also shows the focus on the big screen for the foreseeable future, as Benioff and Weiss would seem like an obvious pairing for the long-teased, recently revived Star Wars TV series.

The small screen success of Game of Thrones was what attracted Lucasfilm president to the pair. “David and Dan are some of the best storytellers working today,” she said in the statment. “Their command of complex characters, depth of story and richness of mythology will break new ground and boldly push Star Wars in ways I find incredibly exciting.”

With the reaction to Episode VIII still dividing the fans, and our first sneak peek of Solo, the next Star Wars spin off film, only yesterday, the sky is awfully crowded with Star Wars news.
