Star-Trek-Into-Darkness-Poster-UKIt’s no secret that we’re all looking forward to J.J. Abrams’ Star Trek Into Darkness next month, with Abrams gearing up for what promises to be a hugely successful sequel to his 2009 franchise-rebooter.

Like pretty much everything Abrams does, much of Star Trek Into Darkness remains shrouded in mystery. And, of course, one of the main topics of debate has been the identity of Benedict Cumberbatch’s character, known so far as ‘John Harrison’.

Paramount have debuted a new clip from the movie in which Cumberbatch and Chris Pine’s Captain Kirk discuss the former’s motives for his actions against Earth.

When the crew of the Enterprise is called back home, they find an unstoppable force of terror from within their own organization has detonated the fleet and everything it stands for, leaving our world in a state of crisis.

With a personal score to settle, Captain Kirk leads a manhunt to a war-zone world to capture a one man weapon of mass destruction.

As our heroes are propelled into an epic chess game of life and death, love will be challenged, friendships will be torn apart, and sacrifices must be made for the only family Kirk has left: his crew.

Pine and Cumberbatch are joined by a terrific cast, led by Zachary Quinto, Karl Urban, Simon Pegg, Zoe Saldana, John Cho, Anton Yelchin, Alice Eve, Bruce Greenwood, and Noel Clarke.

Abrams is directing from a script penned by co-writers Roberto Orci and Alex Kurtzman (Star Trek, Transformers) and Damon Lindelof (Prometheus).

Star Trek Into Darkness will be released in 3D and IMAX 3D on 9th May here in the UK, with its US release date set for the following week on May 17th, with US fans having the chance to see the film two days early at IMAX theatres on May 15th. For now, here’s the new clip to get you in the mood. It’s easy to see why the anticipation surrounding this one is so high.
