When Chris Pine was cast as captain of the world’s most famous starship he needed to prove himself not only capable of leading a huge action movie but also assuage the legion of Star Trek fans to whom James Tiberius Kirk will always be Mr. William Shatner.

Not only did he prove himself quite the leading man but his take on the character was a curious mixture of respect and playful mocking of Shatner’s Kirk as well as his own spin on what emerged as a reticent hero.

With the second voyage into JJ Abrams’ Star Trek universe mere weeks away this character profile of Kirk gives us the perspective of the director and actor on recreating an iconic role.

Star Trek Into Darkness opens in the UK on the 2nd of May.
