Spider-Man 3 was a crushing disappointment, but Sam Raimi was still going to return to direct a fourth instalment of the franchise. John Malkovich was being eyed for the role of The Vulture (a role now taken by Michael Keaton in Spider-Man: Homecoming), while Anne Hathaway was set to play The Vulturess, a bizarre new take on Felicia Hardy/Black Cat.

For a myriad of reasons, the movie didn’t happen, and Sony instead decided to reboot the franchise with the Marc Webb helmed The Amazing Spider-Man in 2012. That series was also prematurely ended, and while plans for that trilogy’s third instalment remain unclear, never before seen concept art for Spider-Man 4 has surfaced which teases Raimi’s plans.

In it we see Spider-Man swinging into action, The Vulture, and a Felicia Hardy who looks a lot like Angelina Jolie. By far the biggest surprise however is the appearance of Mysterio, a character who fans theorised at the time would be revealed as Bruce Campbell (explaining his three cameo appearances as three different characters). There’s a resemblance there!

This is an interesting look at what might have been, and it will be interesting to see if more follows. With Spider-Man now in the MCU though, it’s hard to care that this didn’t happen!
