This week, I was cordially invited to attend a See Film Differently event in Edinburgh on behalf of HeyUGuys.

See Film Differently is a concept established by Volkswagen and Little White Lies. The idea is to hold unique and immersive film screenings, where press and members of the public can enjoy classic films in the places where they were shot.

Past events have included screenings of An American Werewolf in London, lit by torchlight at the London Zoo, and Get Carter, held at the distinguished Newcastle Racecourse.

This time the spotlight was on Trainspotting, a crime film directed by Danny Boyle. Focusing on a group of heroin addicts in a late 1980’s, the film traces each characters’ individual passage through life, how they deal with drugs, poverty and the trials and tribulations of their immediate friendships.

The unorthodox screening, which included complimentary snacks and drinks, was held at the Royal Scottish Academy, with the exhibition, showcasing rare photography and original promotional material from the film, held straight after at the Ingleby Gallery – both locations only footsteps away from where the film’s most iconic scenes were shot.

It was a night of appreciating film on a different, more intimate level: watching Boyle’s most noteworthy film; mixing with fellow film journalists; enjoying fish & chips and an Irn Bru; appreciating the rare film memorabilia on display at a prestigious city gallery; and of generally soaking up the marvelous, vibrant atmosphere. It’s a night I’ll be sure to linger on for a very long time.

A special thanks to See Film Differently and Little White Lies for a truly unforgettable evening celebrating a truly illustrious Scottish film in the reverberant city of Edinburgh.

Trainspotting is available on to buy on DVD, or to rent from LoveFilm.
