The neon skyline of animation’s next big swing just got a serious upgrade. Scarlett Johansson, Sam Rockwell and Tom Waits have officially joined the voice cast of ‘Ray Gunn,’ the latest feature from acclaimed filmmaker Brad Bird.
The trio will star alongside veteran voice actor John Ratzenberger in the Skydance Animation production, which is set to debut on Netflix later this year.
According to the official logline, ‘Ray Gunn’ unfolds in Metropia, a sprawling, retro-futuristic metropolis imagined through the lens of 1939’s vision of the future. At its smoky, neon-lit heart is private investigator Raymond Gunn, who finds himself entangled in a case that blends aliens, murder and a mysterious multimedia star known as Venus Nova. Think trench coats and flying saucers, jazz clubs humming beneath hovering skylines.

‘Ray Gunn’ marks Bird’s first directorial outing since Incredibles 2. The Oscar-winning filmmaker, also known for The Incredibles, is writing and directing the project, continuing his long-standing relationship with ambitious, visually inventive storytelling.
Bird is also gearing up for another return to one of his most beloved franchises, as he’s attached to write and produce Incredibles 3, currently slated for a 2028 release.
The film is being produced by a heavyweight team including John Lasseter, David Ellison and Dana Goldberg for Skydance Animation.
