Filmmaker Sam Mendes and Olivia Colman are set to work together on Mendes next project ‘Empire of Light’ at Searchlight Pictures.

The film is described as a love story set in and around a beautiful old cinema on the South Coast of England in the 1980s.

Mendes will also team up once again with the ‘1917’ cinematographer Roger Deakins, who just happened to win an Oscar for best cinematography last year at the Academy Awards for his work on the film. Mendes and Deakins have previously worked together on ‘Skyfall’ and ‘Revolutionary Road.’

“I have long been an admirer of Searchlight and the dynamic way they have produced and released some of my favourite theatrical releases of recent years,” Mendes said in a statement. “This project is very close to my heart, and I couldn’t be more delighted that it has found its ideal home.”

Colman was recently seen as Queen Elizabeth II in the Netflix series ‘The Crown’ and can next be seen in the harrowing drama ‘The Father’ alongside Anthony Hopkins.

The film is scheduled for an Autumn 2022 release.
