Casting is well underway on The Shining sequel, Doctor Sleep. Mission Impossible’s Rebecca Ferguson has joined Ewan McGregor on the feature.

At the beginning of June, it was reported that McGregor had been cast as the adult version of Danny Torrance; the son of Jack Torrance as played by Jack Nicholson in the Kubrick film. Exactly who Ferguson will be playing has not been revealed.

The plot of the follow-up centres around Torrance, who still traumatised by the events that took place in the Overlook Hotel. He has become just like his murderous father, with lingering rage and a drinking problem that dulls his pain as well as his ‘shining’ powers.

Those powers return when he embraces sobriety and uses his gift to help the dying at a hospice. He establishes a psychic connection with a young girl who shares his extreme abilities, and who is being targeted by a group who make others like them suffer painful deaths in order to absorb their powers.

Mike Flanagan, who directed King’s Gerald’s Game, will again take the helm on the project. Trevor Macy and Jon Berg are producing. The film is likely to land sometime in 2020.

Stanley Kubrick directed the original adaptation of “The Shining,” starring Jack Nicholson and Shelley Duvall. At the time of the release, the film bombed but went on to become a cult classic.

Ferguson’s career is going from strength to strength. Last seen in the runaway hit, The Greatest Showman opposite Hugh Jackman, the actress will reprise her role as Ilsa Faust in Mission: Impossible – Fallout next month.
