Broadcaster Channel 5 has released a bumper trailer for ‘Power: The Downfall of Huw Edwards,’ a feature-length drama that examines the shocking scandal surrounding former BBC newsreader Huw Edwards.

The film stars Martin Clunes as Edwards, charting the downfall of one of Britain’s most trusted television figures. The first look also introduces Osian Morgan as “Ryan,” the vulnerable teenager at the centre of the story.

Directed by BAFTA and Emmy-winning filmmaker Michael Samuels and written by Mark Burt, the drama explores how Edwards’ secret online behaviour ultimately led to his public collapse and conviction for serious child sexual offences.

In September 2022, Edwards was at the peak of his career. As one of the most trusted newsreaders in the UK, he delivered some of the country’s most significant moments of national news. That included announcing the death of Queen Elizabeth II to millions of viewers across the nation.

But behind the scenes, the drama reveals a darker story unfolding online.

The film focuses on allegations that Edwards had been repeatedly soliciting explicit photos from young men, including grooming a vulnerable 17-year-old. It also explores his online interactions with another individual who sent him messages containing child abuse imagery between December 2020 and August 2021. Those messages included so-called “Category A” images, the most serious classification under UK law.

As the narrative unfolds, the drama depicts Edwards’ double life spiralling out of control, culminating in his dramatic withdrawal from public life and the collapse of a once-untouchable reputation.

Behind the camera, the film is directed by Michael Samuels, whose previous work includes the acclaimed Holocaust drama ‘The Windermere Children.’ The script comes from Mark Burt, while production duties are handled by Angie Daniell.
