National Geographic has unveiled the official trailer and premiere date for ‘Pompeii: Out of Time with Tom Hiddleston,’ a gripping new three-part docudrama that fuses cinematic storytelling with cutting-edge historical investigation. The series will premiere on July 23 on Disney+, with a broadcast debut on National Geographic at 8 & 9pm the same day.

Produced by Plimsoll Productions, the series sees actor Tom Hiddleston return to documentary storytelling alongside Kevin R. Wright, reuniting the creative team behind Loki for a genre-blending exploration of one of history’s most infamous disasters.

Blending scripted drama with investigative documentary, the series transports viewers back to ancient Pompeii in the critical hours before and during the eruption of Mount Vesuvius.

Guided by a team of archaeologists, historians, geologists, and disaster experts, Hiddleston uncovers new evidence that challenges long-held assumptions about the tragedy. The series suggests a startling possibility: many of those caught in the eruption may have had more opportunity to survive than previously believed.

With each revelation, the narrative builds toward a powerful reinterpretation of what really happened when Vesuvius awakened.

The series uses a bold narrative device in which Hiddleston physically “steps” into the past, transitioning into cinematic scripted sequences that reconstruct the lives of real Romans facing the impending disaster.

Among them:

  • A teenage apprentice navigating survival in a collapsing world
  • A powerful businesswoman confronting impossible decisions
  • A mysterious member of the Praetorian Guard caught between duty and fate

As the volcano begins its catastrophic eruption, each storyline converges into a tense, real-time race against annihilation.

As the countdown to destruction accelerates, the series pieces together the human choices behind the tragedy—who survived, who perished, and why.

By combining forensic science with immersive drama, ‘Pompeii: Out of Time’ aims to reshape how audiences understand one of history’s most studied disasters.
