The sequel to last year’s surprise horror hit Paranormal Activity (imaginatively entitled Paranormal Activity 2) has scored the highest-grossing opening weekend ever for a horror movie, pulling in an estimated .5 million.

The original ended up making an incredible 7m (against a production budget of ,000!), and the sequel is another success story in low-budget, astutely marketed Hollywood filmmaking.

Interestingly, the number 2 entry Hereafter (another supernatural tale directed by the legendary Clint Eastwood and starring box office friendly Matt Damon), has failed to make much of a dent with just m in returns this weekend, having expanded nationwide this week. Could this be a sign of things to come in regards to big studio product vs. no-name indie features?

Rounding out the top three is Jackass 3-D, which has climbed to .1 million in ten days, easily beating Number Two’s .8 million to become the highest grosser of the franchise. Another success for 3D!
