Pacific-Rim-PosterWith just over two weeks left on the clock before Guillermo del Toro’s immensely anticipated Pacific Rim hits the multiplex, we’ve no doubt got a lot to look forward to from the blockbuster in the coming days.

Warner Bros. released an epic new trailer for the film earlier in the week. And now the studio have debuted the first clip, via Yahoo Movies, in which we get to see a stand-off between Charlie Hunnam and Idris Elba.

When legions of monstrous creatures, known as Kaiju, started rising from the sea, a war began that would take millions of lives and consume humanity’s resources for years on end. To combat the giant Kaiju, a special type of weapon was devised: massive robots, called Jaegers, which are controlled simultaneously by two pilots whose minds are locked in a neural bridge. But even the Jaegers are proving nearly defenseless in the face of the relentless Kaiju. On the verge of defeat, the forces defending mankind have no choice but to turn to two unlikely heroes–a washed up former pilot (Charlie Hunnam) and an untested trainee (Rinko Kikuchi)–who are teamed to drive a legendary but seemingly obsolete Jaeger from the past. Together, they stand as mankind’s last hope against the mounting apocalypse.

Rinko Kikuchi completes the leading trio alongside Hunnam and Elba, with Charlie Day, Rob Kazinsky, Max Martini, and Ron Perlman heading up the great ensemble.

Del Toro is directing from a script he co-wrote with Travis Beacham. And with Pacific Rim 2 already being talked about, we look set to have ourselves a franchise to look forward to in the years to come.

Pacific Rim will be released in 3D and IMAX 3D on July 12th in the US and UK, hitting theatres in two weeks’ time tomorrow. Whilst we count down the days, here’s the first clip from the film, showing we’ve got more than just action sequences to look forward to here.
